Gildan Activewear (PPAI 250187) has announced the opening of the newly refurbished Majoncho Sosa community park in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. The Montreal, Quebec-based supplier is the largest private employer in the area and contributed $570,000 to the project. Gildan representatives joining members of the community and Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández at the park’s inauguration.
“We are very pleased to be able to help promote exercise and sport as a healthy lifestyle alternative to the citizens of San Pedro Sula,” says Claudia Sandoval, vice president, corporate citizenship. “We believe that active living through sport and fitness can provide a healthy outlet for youth, create a greater sense of community and encourage people to improve their physical health. The recreational sports facilities can provide a safe place for families and members of the community to play and be together in a positive environment.”
This park is the largest in the city, and second largest in the country, providing a modern, multi-sport recreational space to unite families and promote sporting activity as part of the Honduran government’s “Parques para una Vida Mejor” (Better Life Parks) program. The program, created in partnership with the private sector, aims to recover public spaces encouraging citizen coexistence and healthy recreation. This was the 55th park to be inaugurated nationally. Gildan’s investment in the park when to support features such as energy efficient LED lighting and multi-purpose fields, playgrounds, a running track, food kiosks and restrooms, as well as rest zones and green picnic areas.
