Exceptional promo companies need exceptional people. Whether you’re seeking your first sales rep or adding to your sales team, it’s important to find the right candidates. The PPAI Industry Job Board is a great place to start to get your opportunities in front of promo pros.

You can also explore a few lesser-known ways to find talent. Trey Morris, a VP/senior consultant for The Center for Sales Strategy, says it’s not easy to find top-performing salespeople, but when you expand your search, you can more easily find those sales superstars. In this issue of PromoPro Daily, we share Morris’ ideas on five different ways to recruit.

1. Look at niche communities. One example is the online gaming community. Morris says gamers often display strong competitive and strategic skills that translate perfectly to a sales role. They have the drive to win and the ability to think strategically, which are both essential qualities for success in sales.

2. Explore crowdfunding platforms. When seeking sales professionals, look at those who have successfully raised funds on platforms like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. These people possess persuasive marketing skills, Morris says. They know how to market something and convince others to invest in it.

3. Keep your eyes open at local venues. Many of the people you meet at local restaurants, clubs and bars are natural salespeople. Morris says they may be outgoing and personable and have a knack for offering solutions customers will love. Just think of all the times a great bartender or waiter got you to spend more money than you intended.

4. Take a closer look at retail stores. According to Morris, retail sales is another area worth looking at when you’re seeking top sales talent. He recommends taking note of the salesperson the next time you have an incredible in-store shopping experience. That person just might have the drive and skills to excel in a sales role at your company.

5. Get involved in sports. Whether you join an adult league or simply attend games as a fan, you might discover some hidden sales talent. Morris says athletes and sports enthusiasts possess the tenacity and drive that are essential for sales success. They also know how to push through adversity.

You never know where you’ll find a fantastic salesperson. Keep an open mind when recruiting, whether you’re using industry job boards or branching out with some less traditional methods.
