Brands work hard to build trust with their audiences. But once a year, they have fun betraying that trust. April 1 is the perfect day to prank loyal customers. However, buzz-worthy spoof products are now being made all year round.
Last year, brands got back into the pranking spirit after most avoided the holiday in 2020. With a raging global pandemic, most consumers were not in the mood to be punk’d. According to a study released last year from Affirm, more than half of Americans (54%)think April Fools’ Day should be cancelled because there were too many surprises in 2020.
For the second year in a row, Google did not run any April Fools’ Day jokes in 2021. Google’s VP of global marketing, Marvin Chow said, “With much of the world still grappling with serious challenges, we feel we should again pause the jokes for April Fools’ Day this year.” With the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, its again unlikely that many brands will be pulling our legs this year.
However, marketers that frequently use humor and the element of surprise in their content are creating ‘fake’ products beyond April Fools’ Day. These spoof products are meant to catch consumers’ attention and inspire a good laugh. Creative marketers give consumers a chance to become part of lighthearted fun with silly, one-of-a-kind promo items.
Here are few all-too-real products we’ve found that’ll make you think the joke’s on you.
