Fans are thrilled that a new Major League Baseball season and a slew of brand-new collectible merchandise have arrived. However, New Era’s new “Overlap” hats for the 2025 season are catching all the headlines, but not in a good way.
New Era, creator of MLB’s official hat, dropped its Overlap 5950 collection on March 10. The eye-catching hats place each team’s logo over the team’s nickname for a 3D-decorated effect.
While many fans nodded in approval after first seeing the hats, a second look revealed that not one, but multiple hats sported NSFW words with the overlapping logo and nickname.
The Rangers, Angels and Astros Slip-Ups
The Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Angels and Houston Astros Overlap caps caught so much flack that MLB was forced to take action.
The Rangers’ hat snafu was so egregious that the MLB abruptly pulled the hat from stores after fans noticed the gaffe.
How bad? The overlap between the team’s logo, the word “Texas” and the secondary logo, the letter “T,” created a word that Spanish-speaking fans were shocked to see – a slang word for “breasts.”
🤣🤣 How did no one with the Texas Rangers cross-check this with a Spanish-speaking staff member? https://t.co/BTbTvK6xVK

Similarly, MLB removed the Angels hat from online stores after its design created another word with vulgar connotations by placing the “A” logo over the “G” in Angels.

And for the third strike, the Houston Astros hat reads like another vulgarity that fans might yell when their favorite player isn’t performing.

These hats are now only available on resale platforms like eBay at inflated prices.
This Isn’t The First Time
New Era is no stranger to similar cringe-worthy mistakes. Within the last year, the hat manufacturer released another cap displaying a vulgar English word often used for the backside.

On the heels of the latest hat gaffes, fans are scrutinizing New Era’s other caps in the new series. While not sporting offensive words, other hats display confusing gibberish.
The Los Angeles Dodgers hat says, “DoLAers.” The Boston Red Sox scored “BOBN” and the Philadelphia Phillies got “PhiPies.” Fans also chortled at the Miami Marlins’ “MMMi” hat.
The Arizona Diamondbacks got “ARIANA,” which may be gaining traction with Ariana Grande fans.

While some fans are offended by the hats, others are shaking their heads at how no one at New Era or MLB saw what everyone else sees.
At the very least, collectors may be fighting to get their hands on these cringey pieces of sports memorabilia.
