June 19 is National Martini Day. Like a dirty martini, the cocktail’s history is a bit murky. Most historians believe the drink originated in Martinez, California, during the mid-1800s Gold Rush. The story goes that a gold miner plunked down a handful of gold nuggets at a local bar and requested something special. The bartender created a drink with what he had on hand — vermouth, bitters, gin and a slice of lemon. He poured it over ice, served it with an olive and called it the Martinez Special.
Since then, martinis have made their mark in books and on the big screen. On National Martini Day, places like bars, lounges and resorts can commemorate the occasion with specials and promotional products. Keep reading this issue of Promotional Consultant Today for some ideas.
